As people are finally catching on to the fact that ‘green’ is better, it’s all gone to the dogs. Even Fido has gone green! From eco-friendly collars to organic pet beds, man’s best friend can enjoy the same level of earth friendliness as his owner. Here are just a few of the products that that you, the eco-conscious consumer can buy for your pet.
Eco-friendly collars, leashes and harnesses are made from recycled materials such as old silk ties or thrifted fabrics. Some are even made from organic cotton, hemp, and sustainable and renewable resources. Even if a collar gets worn out, many times its metal parts are still fully functional and can be recycled into another collar.
If your pet sleeps on the floor or outside, consider a soft, comfortable organic cotton bed or an eco-fleece pillow made out of recycled plastic soda bottles. Did you know that it takes 450 years for a soda bottle to decompose? By reusing materials, it helps keep unnecessary waste out of the landfills.
Just as some toys may be toxic to our children, they may also be toxic to our pets. Choosing toys made ethically from safe, eco-friendly materials and plant and mineral based dyes are good for your pet and good for the planet.
You eat 99% organic and shop for you and your family at the Farmer’s Market and Whole Foods. Why do you give your precious pet dog food made from who knows what? Well, if you are like me and on a budget, buying organic for your pet may not be an option. However there are companies making better-for-your-pet food that will not break the bank. These foods are nutritious and may even extend the healthy life of your beloved pet.
Grooming your pet used to entail endless dippings in toxic flea shampoo and a myriad of chemical-laden products. Now, many alternative pet salons are offering chemical-free, non-toxic alternatives that are just as effective in getting rid of fleas and making your dog fit for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
Depending on your budget, you can make wiser choices for your pet and the environment that will lessen the amount of toxins in your home environment and make for a happier pup or kitty.
