Over the last few weeks, we have journeyed through what not to eat and learned how to love food. In this, our last look into food for our "Healthier You" series, we are delving into some extraordinary foods and unlocking their secrets to better health.
We touched on raw, organic milk briefly in a previous article, but more must be told about this truly wonderful food. Even people who are diagnosed as lactose intolerant can often drink raw milk with no negative issues at all. Raw, organic milk is full of enzymes and beneficial bacteria that help aid in digestion. The enzyme lactase is destroyed during pasteurization which is what causes "lactose intolerance". Most diagnoses of lactose are
completely bogus, when in fact what people cannot tolerant is denatured pasteurized milk in itself. Some benefits of raw milk are its apparent healing properties. People who only drink raw milk report fewer allergies, less ear infections, and overall better health than those who drink pasteurized homogenized milk.
Raw, organic milk from grass-fed cows contains high concentrations of CLA which stands for conjugated linoleic acid. According to research, CLA is a poly-unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that raises the metabolic rate, helps remove abdominal fat, boosts muscle growth, reduces resistance to insulin, strengthens the immune system and lowers food allergy reactions (See www.raw-milk-facts.com).
Saturated fat and fat-soluble vitamins present in raw milk are very important to the human body. More people die from heart disease now that hydrogenated fats and oils are prevalent in our country. The Standard American Diet (SAD) says that saturated fats are bad. If you are consuming large amounts of sweets that may be the case, however, most commercial cakes, cookies and other sweets contain hydrogenated fats, vegetable, canola and soy oils. Those substances are the trouble-makers, not the saturated fats from butter or raw milk.

Raw Honey is considered to be a super food. It has been used for centuries as a healing food and is being rediscovered by many as such. Raw honey is honey that has not been pasteurized, clarified or filtered so none of the natural enzymes or nutrients have been destroyed. Also intact is the honey's inherent antimicrobial antiseptic, antibiotic and antibacterial properties. Honey aids the stomach in digestion and can also be very
soothing. It is used to alleviate sore throats and even morning sickness. It is used to treat stomach ulcers and cure allergies and respiratory problems. Raw honey is also an immune system booster and is even more effective when coupled with herbs to make an elixir. It can also be used as a salve for burns, cuts and scrapes and promotes healing.
It is best to eat local honey because the bees pollinate local foliage. This helps if you have seasonal allergies (Bee pollen is also wonderful for the treatment of seasonal allergies). The phytonutrients in honey have cancer-preventing and anti-tumor properties as well as numerous antioxidants which help fight free-radicals. Raw honey still contains Propolis and bee pollen because it is not filtered out, so you get many of those benefits as
well. Research has shown that consumption of raw honey actually lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases HDL (good) cholesterol. Artificial honey and white sugar have the opposite effect. Raw honey causes less of a rise in blood sugar than white sugar. Raw honey also contains vitamin B2, B6, iron and manganese.
Do not feed any kind of honey to babies under twelve months of age. Honey can contain
Clostridium botulinum spores which are toxic and can cause infant botulism. Raw honey is
safe for everyone over twelve months old.
Coconut oil is absolutely the healthiest oil to cook with since it does not go rancid and it is not susceptible to oxidative damage. Coconut oil is a healthy fat that can actually help boost metabolism and promote weight loss. It also supports thyroid gland health and promotes heart health. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid which is present in breastmilk. Lauric acid is a wonderful immune-system booster. Coconut oil can be used as a lotion and helps keep your skin naturally soft and healthy. It is a predominant source of medium-chain fatty acids which are easily converted to energy by the liver and help stimulate the metabolism. Coconut oil is the oil of choice for everyone looking to improve their overall health. Look for organic brands that use minimal processing like Fresh Shores or Tropical Traditions.
Adding these three extraordinary foods to your diet will help you achieve optimal health. Remember that getting back to natural is the best way to improve your health and well-being.
